Animal Anthology: Land Lovers

Animal Anthology: Land Lovers by Valarie Morris is a delightful collection of 18 duets that introduce ensemble playing through canons, octave and unison voicing, parallel thirds, and basic contrapuntal harmonies. The simple rhythms, varied endings, dynamics, and articulations develop a wide range of skills within a range of D4 to G6, with each piece using a slightly higher range. K.A.S.

What a Year!

What a Year! by Valarie Morris is a collection of 12 duets named after the months of the year that cover a variety of rhythms, dynamics, endings, articulations, and key signatures. Parallel thirds and fourths with more difficult passages written in rhythmic unison or canon, performance notes, and tempo markings make these pieces good for sightreading. K.A.S.

What a Week!

What a Week! by Valarie Morris. These seven duets in eight major keys, Eb, Ab, C, Db, D, Bb, and F, with a key change in one tune, contain variations in meter, phrasing, dynamics, and embellishments that provide a musical challenge. Swing, waltz, and other styles offer a new twist for players, and jazz rhythms and chord changes flavor the melodies. Text expressions such as light, grandiose, and imagining the weekend, help players interpret each duet. Chord changes are indicated under some of the duets, and the book includes three pages of manuscript paper for improvisation ideas. K.A.S.

Serenade

Serenade by Valarie Morris is a short, light jazz ballad for flute and piano. Both flute and piano parts have chord symbols to encourage improvisation. Written in G major with a range of B4 to A6, this piece is an excellent teaching tool for jazz style and chord symbol reading. D.B.S.

Good Morning, Rachel

Good Morning, Rachel by Valarie Morris is a light jazzy solo with blues melodies and a lyrical style. Frequent rests and time changes add tension and spice to the short work, which ends with a two measure, fade-out vamp followed by a tag ending. K.A.S.
